About This Site
This site was developed as a project for MINF 520, Consumer Health Informatics to address questions from consumers about the risks of using a low carbohydrate diet to lose weight. The developer, Kathryn H. Thompson is a student in the Medical Informatics Certificate Program at Oregon Health Sciences University. Dr. Thompson holds a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry from Cornell University. She teaches biochemistry and nutrition at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine where she is also Faculty and Curriculum Development Coorindinator for Information Technology. She is a Registered Dietitian and has been a member of the American Dietetic Association since 1983.

Information for this site was obtained by searching the OVID databases (Medline, 1998-2001, Premedline, Cochrane Database, ACP Journal Club, DARE and AMED) for dietary fat. The search was limited to reviews and English language. The results were sorted for studies that related to heart disease, cancer, obesity and weight loss. References and a short description of some of these studies are provided on reference pages for each topic.

This site was last revised on December 3, 2001.
