A list of simple errors
to correct in your Final Draft


There are some very common spelling and usage errors that can be corrected easily in 15 minutes or less, before you print out the final draft of your paper. To catch all the mistakes, you should probably do a quick search for every word or phrase listed in the left-hand column. Finish by doing a spellcheck.

= it is (read the sentence aloud replacing it's with it is to see if it sounds right)

its = the possessive form
ex: The pterodactyl flapped its wings.

(replace with the other one)

their / there / they're

(replace with one of the other ones)

ex:
If you lose your wallet, you'll have nothing but the loose change in your pocket.


rein


reign


rein
= to control (as in reins for controlling a horse)

reign = to rule (as a monarch reigns)

throne = the thing a monarch sits on

'single quotation marks'

"double quotation marks"

Double quotation marks are standard in the U.S., unless you have 'a quotation within' a quotation."

(If you read a text that uses the opposite style, it was probably published in the UK or Canada)
